Thermo Fisher Scientific Launches New Sample Position Illuminator Feature for NanoDrop 8000

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., has introduced a Sample Position Illuminator feature for the Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 8000 Spectrophotometer. The NanoDrop 8000 takes full spectrum UV/VIS absorbance measurements of eight 1 ul samples in 20 seconds, allowing researchers to work with greater numbers of samples in less time while providing the overall capabilities and ease of use of the groundbreaking Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 1000 Spectrophotometer.

The new Sample Position Illuminator keeps track of the samples to be measured by lighting up wells from beneath the plate. This helps the user to know which wells to draw from for the next measurement, reducing fatigue and human error. The Sample Position Illuminator is simple to use and is linked to the existing graphical interface in the latest software for the NanoDrop 8000. Prior to measurement, the user selects the samples to be measured from the on-screen position indicator. The Sample Position Illuminator then lights up the corresponding wells that are to be measured.

The user may also take advantage of three unique features when using the new software and accompanying Sample Position Illuminator:

  • The Auto Column Advance feature increases throughput by automatically lighting up the next column to be measured.
  • The system also allows the user to select single or multiple wells for measurement which are then lit up by the Sample Position Illuminator.
  • The user may define measurement limits, such as upper and lower concentrations of an analyte (e.g. 100 ng/ul dsDNA +/- 20 ng/ul). Wells that are determined to be “out of limit” will be identified by both flashing lights under the sample plate and a color code on the plate results summary screen.

As of April 2008, the Sample Position Illuminator and accompanying software is shipped as standard with Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 8000 instruments.

ECD Receives Vision Award for MegaM.O.L.E.20 Thermal Profiler

The SMT China Vision award was presented to ECD at Nepcon China in Shanghai, and was given in the Process Control Tools category, recognizing the MegaM.O.L.E.20 for its innovation and excellence at both engineering and production levels.

Simplicity and accuracy for the production operator have proved to be two critical requirements for success in China’s electronics assembly industry. The only thermal profiler offering 20 channels, and at 7.2 mm, the thinnest available, ECD’s MegaM.O.L.E.20 provides both.  It allows the engineer the flexibility to enter the criteria pertinent to the production profile, while giving the production operator a simple, clear, and definitive “Go/No Go” signal by means of the patent-pending “OK” button. This feature alone saves considerable time and money as the engineers are freed for the more complex tasks requiring their attention.

Also paramount to success in China is the preservation of the valuable “golden boards” and prototypes, which are both costly and logistically difficult to replace.  Using the 20 thermocouples and data-rich flexible MAP software, the MegaM.O.L.E.20 is able to extract data in the needed format with only one pass, reducing wear and tear on these costly-to-replace boards.
